When it’s time to replace your roof, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to go with 3-tab shingles or architectural shingles. These are two of the most common roofing options for homes in Texas and Georgia, but they differ in look, cost, durability, and lifespan.

So what exactly is the difference? And which one should you choose?

What Are 3-Tab Shingles?

3-tab shingles are the traditional, flat shingles you’ve probably seen on many older homes. Each shingle strip has three tabs, giving the roof a simple, uniform appearance.

Advantages:

  • Budget-friendly: Lowest upfront cost

  • Lightweight: Good for older roof structures

  • Easy to install and replace

  • Clean, flat look

Things to Consider:

  • Shorter lifespan: typically, 12–20 years

  • Less wind and hail resistance

  • More prone to curling, cracking, and fading

  • May not stand up to severe Nebraska or Iowa storms

What Are Architectural Shingles?

Also called dimensional shingles, architectural shingles are made with multiple layers of asphalt to create a thicker, textured look. They’re designed to mimic high-end materials like slate or cedar shake, without the high cost.

Advantages:

  • Longer lifespan: Often 20 - 25+ years

  • Stronger and more Durable: Better resistance to wind, hail, and UV damage

  • Enhanced appearance – Adds depth and curb appeal

  • Stronger warranties from manufacturers

  • Better resale value for your home

Things to Consider:

  • Higher upfront cost

  • Heavier than 3-tab shingles (though this usually isn’t an issue)

  • May take longer to install

So… Which Roofing Shingle Technology Should You Choose?

Here’s a simple way to decide:

  • If you want the most affordable option upfront: 3-Tab Shingles

  • If you want better performance in storms: Architectural

  • If you want a clean, basic looking roof: 3-Tab Shingles

  • If you want long-term durability and value: Architectural

  • If you want higher curb appeal and resale value: Architectural

  • If you want a short-term fix or rental property solution: 3-Tab Shingles

Our recommendation for most homes is to go with an architectural shingle. The extra durability, protection, and aesthetic boost are usually worth the added cost, whether you're selling your home soon, or planning on living there another 20 years.
